Issue No. 2: The Sophomore Slump
-
September 17,2019
Dear readers,
I'd like to kick off Issue 2 with a little bit of clarification. Many of you seemed confused about what the actual newsletter was/is.
The Sarah Davis Newsletter was, and is, the body of the email. You are currently reading the Sarah Davis Newsletter (SDNL) right at this very moment. The press release which I attached to the previous email was just that: a press release. I can see how this was confusing, as the press release was about the newsletter, the email to which the press release was attached.
If you'd like to be confused further, I will tell you that I used the "newsletter" template on Google Docs to create the press release.
I'm hoping Issue 2 is stress-free. I'm providing you with some news here in this email, and I have attached a press release about how I'm really into cottage cheese right now. The idea is that press releases will be about important, press-worthy announcements about my life which may be attached to emails (newsletters) with varying content and which may contain, get ready, other kinds of documents.
Is that ok? Does that make sense? Maybe it's simpler if I just say the whole thing is the newsletter. "The whole thing is the newsletter!" This semantic deliberation is over!
News
- I am currently at an Arts District café which will remain anonymous. I have consumed an entire pot of Oolong and I have been spending the last forty minutes trying to discern whether or not the two men at the table next to me are on a date. 8am is a little early, even for a coffee date, but their body language suggests the nervousness of early-stage dating. One man is definitely from a Scandinavian country. I am choosing to believe this is a date. This is already boring, let's move on.
- Like the moon, I go through various cycles. One of these is my interest in ragtime music. My interest in ragtime music is currently waxing.
- For those of you with whom I interact IRL on a frequent or semi-frequent basis, please note that my weekend is changing! My weekend is now Friday & Saturday! Subject to change, restrictions may apply.

Fashion
- I am obsessed with Tibi creator Amy Smilovic's Instagram. An image caption that really resonates with me: "...when you wear the modern suit, you start to think more modern thoughts... and then you have more modern ideas... and when you present said modern ideas, people take you more seriously. See how that works?" Sign me up.>
- September is here which bums me out because I want to wear sweaters but it's not cold yet.
- I was browsing Pinterest on my lunch break and a coworker asked what I was working on. I said "Oh, nothing. I'm looking at ballgowns on Pinterest." And she said, "You have a newsletter now. You can just say it's research." She's so right: please enjoy my Black Tie Pinterest Board full of ballgowns that you can buy me for my birthday.
Self-loathing and Dread
- I was experiencing an average level of self-loathing and dread, but much to my surprise, I experienced a sharp uptick upon workshopping SDNL Issue 2. How could this be?! I was sharing with so many people that I had finally found a rewarding and accomplishable writing project. Ah, wait, no, that is exactly why I am experiencing it. A press release about cottage cheese? That's THE dumbest idea I have ever conjured! I'm scrapping it. Oh no, now I have nothing! Everyone keeps asking me when I'm going to send it, people are watching me. I have to do it. But I can't! It's crap! Et cetera. So that's why I named it Sophomore Slump because I get to say it first. Not you! You can't hate it, I already hate it. I hated it before you, I beat you. Ha!
So that about sums it up. If you still have questions, I've attached an FAQ. If you still have questions after reading that, please feel free to reach out to me. I look forward to your feedback, dear readers, and I hope you have a lovely Autumn.
Talk soon,
Sarah
